He has received several awards including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) International Development and Education Award (IDEA), and ECOG Foundation/Paul Carbone, MD Fellowship award. A previous German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholar, his additional distinctions and awards include University of Ibadan Skilled Hands Award, UICC International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowship, European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) TRU Visit Grant, and ASCO Merit award. His research interests include a US National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded colorectal cancer genomic study. He has several peer-reviewed publications and is a member of numerous professional societies.

Dr. Akintayo Sokunbi, obtained his MBChB in 1998 from the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, Nigeria. He did his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Detroit Medical center/Wayne State University, Detroit, USA where he also served as the Chief Medical Resident and Junior Faculty of the residency program. He completed his Fellowship training at the Henry Ford Hospital in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and he is currently working as a consultant physician at MidMichigan Health System in Midland Michigan, an affiliate of the University of Michigan. Dr. Sokunbi’s practice specializes in the care of critically ill medical and surgical patients in the intensive care units. He is an expert in the management of patients on life support. He performs various procedures including Bronchoscopy, Endo-Bronchial Ultrasound-guided Biopsy, Navigational bronchoscopy for the diagnosis of lung cancer and other lung diseases. He manages patients with various respiratory problems including Asthma, COPD, lung fibrosis and many more in his outpatient clinic where he practices pulmonary medicine.
Dr. Sokunbi is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Tokunbo David Gbadebo is a graduate of St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka. Thereafter, he received all his subsequent education in the USA. He completed his BS and MS degrees from VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA) prior to earning his MD degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency training at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. Subsequently, he received training in Cardiovascular Diseases at Duke University Medical Center, and afterwards completed a second advanced fellowship training in cardiac EP (Cardiac Electrophysiology) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
He has been board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is an accomplished electrophysiologist with international reputation with almost two decades of experience in cardiovascular medicine. He has published in numerous journals including Circulation, American Heart Journal, and Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. He is considered a key opinion leader (KOL) with distinction in his specialty.
He has given presentations, received awards, and served as Chair at annual scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and Heart Rhythm Society (HRS). Dr. Gbadebo was formerly Secretary of ABC (Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc), and Chair of the Electrophysiology Committee of ABC. He remains active in scientific research, serves as consultant and speaker for some pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
He has performed numerous cardiac surgeries in Nigeria, including CRT-D (cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator) implantation for treatment of advanced heart failure. Dr. Gbadebo is in active clinical practice with East Atlanta Cardiology, USA, and is also the Chief Consultant and CEO of Heart Corporation, LLC.
